Description

This five week series of seminars will explore the emergence, spread and meaning of social realism in art.

With its roots in genre painting and journalism, the emphasis on grass roots experiences and its political edge, situate it between documentary and propaganda, exposing the dignity as well as the difficulties of lives overlooked by this sphere of culture.

This is a seminar-style course which combines information sharing, group discussion and debate and the close study of individual works and related historical sources and academic writings. It is led by a small team of experienced tutors: Miriam Gill, David Antill and Ellie Pridgeon.

This five week course will run on Wednesday afternoons, 1-3pm, starting on Wednesday 7 May and ending on 4 June 2025.

Participants must be aged 18+. No prior knowledge of art history or study experience is required.
