Introduction to Lino Cut

Course Description:

As a complete beginner or looking to refresh your skills, this course will immerse you in the world of lino printing. Through carving, cutting, rolling and printing you will gain the basic skills to create your very own Lino print and learn techniques to further your work.

In the first week, you will be introduced to the tools used for lino cutting and will explore different ways of making marks to gain an understanding of relief printing through taking a print from their experiments. In the second week, you will explore your own designs and learn how to adapt them and transfer them onto lino. Through this process you will gain an understanding of reversing your designs with focus on line thickness and quality. The third week will bring experimenting with the printing process, learning to take a print by hand and using the press and explore different inks, papers and techniques. The final week will culminate in working towards creating a finished print and gain an understanding of how to further your prints with technique such as chine-colle and jigsaw plates.

Course Tutor:

This workshop is led by Johanna Shearer, previously a teacher of the arts in local schools, she has taught at Attenborough Arts for over 4 years including the popular Adventures in Art course, and is an avid printmaker with a huge passion for crafts, collage and colour.
