Opportunities for Young People to Respond Creatively to Jenny Holzer Exhibition

In response to Attenborough Art Centre’s latest exhibition, ARTIST ROOM Jenny Holzer, we are inviting young people aged 16 – 25 to create and curate their own work to be showcased in our Salmon Gallery as part of Next Gen. Creatives.

Next Gen. Creatives invites young people aged 16 – 25 to shape our artistic programme, empowering them to become the next generation of artists, curators, performers and creative professionals. The name, chosen by the participants, is inspired by the slogan: ‘we are the next generation dreamers’.

By joining Next Gen. Creatives, young people in Leicester have the opportunity to network with professional artists and practitioners, gain valuable life skills and learn about the various employment pathways open to them in the arts and creative sector. In recent years the group has delivered their own workshops, curated their own exhibitions, met internationally renowned artists and taken part in artist-led workshops.

These sessions take place from July – September, working with contemporary artist Orla Toland and poet John Berkavitch. Participants are invited to explore text and language as art:

  • Zines as a means of self-publishing
  • Projection with text on the outside of our building
  • Printmaking with text words
  • Explore where text meets light
  • Create concrete poetry & spoken word

The final outcomes will be curated in the Salmon Gallery as a takeover. These sessions are free to all, they just have to register their interest to join Next Gen. Creatives through email.

Dates include:

  • July 30
  • August 6
  • August 13
  • August 20
  • August 27
  • September 3

Tuesday evenings 5:30pm – 7:30pm, all at Attenborough Arts Centre.

To book please email arts-learning@leicester.ac.uk stating which dates you can make. Please feel free to attend all or some – the more the better.

It is hard to locate the up and coming courses via phone. The site does not appear to be user friendly and simply set out.

Hi Deb, sorry to hear! At the time of your comment we only had two creative courses available as our new Autumn season had not launched so that may be why you couldn’t find any up-and-coming courses. It has launched today, but if you have any more trouble with our website please reach out to our Front of House at arts-centre@leicester.ac.uk or call 0116 252 2455 for help.

I agree…it’s confusing. It was easy access before. Courses, Performances were listed and we’re easy to book online…

Hi Sue, sorry to hear! Our What’s On has been in place for nearly two years now and was developed for easy access, however we always appreciate feedback so we can improve or help if we can. If you would like to discuss it further please contact us at arts-centre@leicester.ac.uk or call 0116 252 2455
