Captured on Canvas: Creating Striking Oil Portraits

Oil painting, an ancient and expressive art form, has always had a prominent place in the art world. And in our upcoming Captured on Canvas course, which runs from October to November, you’ll have the opportunity to experience portraiture for yourself.

Under the tutelage of artist Jemisha Maadhavji, you will be able to master the basic techniques of portrait painting and eventually create your own oil portrait.

What can you expect?

Starting from the basics, you will progressively master how to confidently use the medium of oil painting, learn how to mix colours, and apply a variety of oil painting techniques. Whether you have experience in painting or not, the learning of these techniques will provide you with a solid foundation for your artistic creation.

The use of colour is one of the core aspects of oil painting. During the course, you will study colour theory in depth and learn how to express different emotions and atmospheres by mixing and matching colours. By using the colour wheel to blend colours, you will be able to present a sense of layering and contrast, making your work visually more vivid and expressive.

The course will also teach you about scale and proportion, which are vital skills especially in portrait painting. By drawing small studies of facial features, you will progressively learn how to accurately represent details and how to harmoniously combine these elements to create a vivid and realistic portrait.
