Discover various styles and techniques to create adventurous, expressive landscape paintings using watercolours and other media.

This course is aimed at adventurous newcomers to using watercolour paint and those with some experience who want to develop and extend their skill range.

Each week tutor Pete Clayton will demonstrate a particular way of applying watercolour paints or a particular style/approach to create a certain mood or express an idea.

We will explore painting in a relaxed, fluid way as well as taking a more careful approach to paint application. Discover ways to create atmosphere, texture and a feeling of space using realistic and more abstract approaches. You will be shown how to incorporate other sympathetic media into your pictures to help make your work more expressive.

If you have some experience using watercolours and would like help to develop specific skills, learn particular techniques or develop a personal project over the six weeks the tutor will be happy to help and give advice.

Some artists to explore include Sesshu Toyo, John Singer Sargent, Paul Klee, Angie Lewin, Ann Blockley, Mark Hearld, Paul and John Nash and Eva Kalien.

Peter holds a Fine Art degree and a Post Graduate Certificate in Education. Over a 40+ year career he has shown in over 160 solo and group exhibitions and has collaborated widely with artists of various disciplines, undertaken residences, and worked with local authorities, museums, interior designers and publishers. His personal work has encompassed a wide variety of painting and printmaking media. Subject matter has been inspired by the landscape (particularly woodland), architecture and family history. Peter has taught courses in Adult and Further Education at numerous venues for 36 years and has been a tutor at Attenborough Arts for 25 years.

All materials will be provided.

This 6-week course will run on Tuesdays 1-3.30pm, starting on 16 April 2024 – 21 May 2024.

Participants must be aged 18+.
