We recently held our first Art Gallery Tour of the exhibition ‘We Grown-Ups Can Also Be Afraid’. It was an opportunity to gain alternative insight and personal perspectives on the works.
Held by our wonderful weekend team, Gallery Assistant XueJiao Huang and Weekend Venue Officer Mita Solanky, the tour was delivered in Mandarin and provided a deep insight into the exhibition while allowing people to engage more deeply with the meaning and contexts of the artwork.
“It was such a lovely experience leading the first Mandarin Art Gallery Tour last Sunday. One of the visitors told me afterwards that the tour really helped her understand the exhibition more deeply — especially by learning about the background stories behind the artworks. And seeing other pieces by the same artists helped her to understand and engage more with the artists.
She also mentioned that joining the tour in her mother language made her feel more comfortable and connected, as she has just started studying in the UK. It was wonderful to see how art and language together created a more personal and inclusive experience.” – XueJiao Huang
These new tours are recommended for people new to the gallery, and are held in small groups to ensure that everyone can get involved and learn something new.
Our next tour will take place Sunday 16 November, led by Mita Solanky the tour will explore ‘Angélica Teuta: Inner Jungle [Putumayo]’. Angélica uses a series of overhead projectors to compose a jungle scene from Putumayo, a region in Colombia, made from tree silhouettes in cardboard, papers and coloured acrylic sheets moved by computer fans. As the layers are superimposed, the viewer is transported to a natural yet enchanting environment.
