Celebrating David Attenborough’s 100th birthday with a special screening of ‘Ocean’

5th May 2026

An audience sat down in a dark room, looking at a large screen showing a blue beach. To the left a man speaks next to a cardboard cut-out of David Attenborough.

Across two days and three screens, our communities came together to honour one of the world’s most beloved storytellers and his lifelong dedication to the natural world.

Over 200 people attended the free screenings of ‘Ocean’, a breath taking and deeply moving journey beneath the waves guided by Attenborough’s iconic narration. From vibrant coral reefs teeming with life to the mysterious depths of the open sea, the film explored the incredible diversity of marine ecosystems and the delicate balance that sustains them.

Through stunning cinematography and powerful storytelling, ‘Ocean’ revealed both the wonder and vulnerability of our blue planet—highlighting the urgent challenges facing our seas, from climate change to pollution, while also offering a message of hope about how we can protect and restore these vital environments for future generations.

The first screening started with a raffle to win a life-size cut-out of David Attenborough with all proceeds going to support out mission for ‘Art for all’, and a message from our Director, Andrew Fletcher, welcoming everyone to the centre. Over the weekend we were joined for a showing by a group from Highfields Community Centre, who we are working with as part of the ‘Step into the Spotlight Project’ to provide dance and performance opportunities for children and young people.

Audience responses:

“Beautiful, devastating but inspiring.”

“Stunning cinematography and with an important message that needs to be heard for action to take place.”

“Depressing but hopeful.”

The University of Leicester’s history is entwined with the Attenborough family, with Sir David’s father, Frederick Attenborough, appointed as Principal of the University College 1932-1951. His sons Richard, David and John grew up on campus. Attenborough Arts Centre was established in 1997 by Lord Richard Attenborough, with his brother, Sir David, officially opening our new galleries in 2016.

Thank you for celebrating this remarkable milestone with us.
