Last Friday (20 October 2023) we hosted an evening celebrating black culture and communities with our Attenborough Late curated by Opal22.
It was an evening of creativity, education and rhythm attended by over 150 people that included life drawing in our galleries surrounded by Arcadia for All? Rethinking Landscapes Painting Now, a DJ set in our café by DJ Glamour, poetry and steel band workshops in our studios, an incredible performance by Contrast Steel Pan in our hall, and rum punch for all.
This event was part of Opal22‘s celebration of Black History Month: Unapologetically Black which took over organisations across Leicester included Leicester Museum & Art Gallery and LCB Depot.
The evening also saw the launch of Habib Hajallie‘s exhibition Black Pen Portraits in Gallery 2. His work strives to readdress the lack of visibility of figures from global majority ethnic backgrounds by questioning our ideas of what it means to be British, as well as the uncomfortable nuances that are associated with this. The exhibition is open till 10 December 2023 and is free to attend for all.
It was an incredible evening that all of Attenborough Arts Centre was proud to be a part of. Here is looking to our next Attenborough Late!
