Public
Spaces
We continually have open spaces available for everyone to access.
Open spaces are crucial to public health and wellbeing as they provide a third space away from home and work, that helps foster community building and a sense of belonging.
In our open spaces we ask you to be respectful of the area and people using it, however we encourage you to utilise the spaces as you need them such as for socialising, studying, crafting, or just relaxing. Explore our range of spaces below:
Salmon Gallery
Located before our art galleries, the Salmon Gallery is a free and accessible space curated by our Learning Team. Inspired by our exhibitions, the space features free art materials such as crayons, paper, pens, glue sticks and more, as well as interactive sensory objects and a library of available books for a range of ages. The space also includes aircon and a heating system, as well as a variety of seating options and height-adjustable tables.
Courtyard
Our outdoor courtyard is located to the right of Gallery 1 and is accessible by going down the stairs or using the lift. The space provides a relaxing area to unwind with nature, with chairs and tables available for use. The greenery has been developed and maintained by Enstruct Training, who offer engaging and accessible alternative learning programmes for young people in unique areas they would not have had opportunities to explore before such as Environmental Studies. In the space they have installed dead hedges to create habitat spaces for fauna, a bug hotel to increase biodiversity and aid in pollination, a rockery for house succulents and a wildflower area. This space can be used for socialising, relaxing, enjoying nature, studying and more.
Balcony Gallery
Located on the second floor and accessible through the stairs, lift or external ramp, the balcony gallery offers an open area to take a seat and relax, study or socialise. With plugs available for charging and access to the internet, this is an ideal place to bring your laptop to either work or study. Keep an eye out for new artwork displayed in this area, as the University of Leicester art collection is exhibited here by our Visual Arts team.
