Hands turning clay on a wheel.

As we enter autumn meaning the year is coming to an end, are you feeling particularly busy and stressed? Why not immerse yourself in the world of pottery and crafts to find inner peace and creative expression.

The upcoming Pottery for All Workshops, running September-December, with tutor and potter Dee Barnes, will take you on a journey to explore the endless possibilities of ceramic art and find your own creative rhythm and inspiration.

What can you expect?

This course will focus on methods and techniques for creating pottery. These provide a comprehensive introductory guide for beginners as well as an opportunity for more advanced students to explore and develop in depth.

Hand building is one of the foundations of pottery and in this section, participants will learn traditional techniques such as pinching, slabbing and coiling. Pinches are a straightforward and ancient pottery technique for beginners to use to master the basic properties of clay, whilst coiling and slab building offer endless possibilities for creating more complex shapes.

In addition to this, the course will also delve into the various stages of clay’s transformation from wet soft to leather hard. This transformation of the clay not only affects the structure and form of the piece, but is also directly related to the final finished result. In the process, you will learn how to manipulate the clay at its best to ensure the success of your work.

Surface decoration is the finishing touch to a ceramic piece, not only does it add visual beauty to the ceramic, but it can also convey unique emotions and meaning. Whether through carving, painting, or stamping moulds, the work can be made full of character and life.
