Explore themes of climate and social justice in the galleries, see the latest performances from leading artists and companies in the theatre, get hands-on with artist-led creative courses and engage with a range of free events designed to celebrate individual and community creativity.
Attenborough Arts Centre’s galleries are busy this season, showcasing four free exhibitions that are open to all. The centre and the University of Leicester continue Covid Changemakers: The Extra Mile until 3 September in Gallery 1. From 15 September, the gallery will host Arcadia for All? Rethinking Landscape Painting Now, delving into themes of access to nature, environmental crisis, colonial legacies and racism in relation to landscape. Gallery 2 continues with Joanna Holland’s Out of the Blue: Landscapes of Chronic Illness, the artists first solo exhibition that explores her lived experiences of autoimmunity. From 20 October, the space will showcase Habib Hajallie’s Black Pen Portraits. The exhibition champions figures from ethnically diverse backgrounds that have been omitted from traditional British portraiture.
Keep your eye on our upcoming events as we will also be bringing back our popular Attenborough Lates event, curated by Opal22 for Black History Month. The late-night takeover will feature live performances and creative activities in response to the gallery’s current exhibitions on the evening of 20 October.
Throughout our theatre we are having upcoming featured performances including Varjack-Lowry’s The Baby Question, Ben Fredericks’ Choosing Children, and Jo Fong and George Orange’s The Rest of Our Lives. Black History Month is celebrated in October with Apittame exploring Creative Writing Black Historical Figures and Creative Writing Afrofuturism. Come December, we will be hosting a range of Holiday related shows including Seven Cinderellas & the Beanstalk by The Comedy Asylum, Theatre Anonymous, A Christmas Carol by 14/48 UK and Fishhouse Theatre is back with Rocket In My Garden – the perfect show for families.
Highlights of its popular Creative Course programme include Introduction to Fused Glass with artist Katherine Wilson, Modern Patchwork and Quilting for Beginners returns with quilting artist and designer Kathleen Anderson, and Singing From Scratch with Laura Freeman. Meanwhile, in the October half-term Attenborough Arts Centre is launching four new Creative Workshops just for families including Cyanotypes for Beginners, Lego Printing, Beginner Crochet, and Modern Punch Needle: Colouring with Yarn.
Alongside Exhibitions, Performances and Creative Courses, we will continue running a range of diverse events to engage local communities including Family Gallery Workshops based on our current exhibitions, free Sunday Sessions in the café with creative activities, a BSL Gallery Tour for Joanna Holland’s exhibition in Gallery 2 on 26 September, and a range of performances at the University of Leicester’s Botanic Garden including Botanical Birdsong by Lucy Stevens, Rishii Chowdhury & Akash Parekar, and The Ugly Bugs Wingding, an interactive family performance exploring a magical kingdom.
With such a range of events on offer, there is sure to be something for everyone this autumn at Attenborough Arts Centre.
